OSPF: An Overview

History
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) is a routing protocol that was first developed for use in Internet Protocol (IP) networks in 1989. It was developed as a replacement for the Routing Information Protocol (RIP), which had a number of limitations, such as the fact that it could only handle a limited number of routers and a limited size of routing tables. OSPF was designed to overcome these limitations and to provide faster and more efficient routing within an autonomous system (AS).

Description
OSPF is a link state routing (LSR) protocol, which means that it operates by maintaining a database of the state of the links (i.e., the connections between routers) in the network. This database is used to calculate the shortest path to a destination. OSPF uses a hierarchical design, in which the network is divided into areas. Each area runs its own instance of the OSPF protocol and has its own link state database. This allows for faster convergence and less routing overhead.

Examples
Example 1:
Imagine a network with 4 routers: A, B, C, and D. Router A is connected to routers B and C, and router C is connected to router D. If a packet needs to be sent from router A to D, OSPF will use the shortest path, which in this case would be A-C-D.

Example 2:
Now imagine that a new router, E, is added to the network, and it is connected to routers B and D. If a packet needs to be sent from router A to E, OSPF will now use the shortest path, which would be A-B-E. This change in the path will be quickly calculated and propagated throughout the network due to the OSPF’s fast convergence.

Example 3:
Consider a network with 6 routers: A, B, C, D, E, and F. Router A is connected to routers B and C, Router B is connected to D, E, and F. OSPF will calculate the shortest path from A to D as A-B-D, and from A to E as A-B-E.

Example 4:
Imagine a network with 3 routers: X, Y, and Z. Router X is connected to Router Y and Router Z. Now if there is a failure in the link between Router X and Router Y, OSPF will quickly recalculate the new shortest path and will propagate it throughout the network.
